Spotify have again shown just how well they know their audience, but also how to best incentivise them to use Spotify. Their latest campaign has certainly shaken the internet, as they’re handing out free tickets to concerts of their user’s favourite artists.
The catch? You must have a paid premium account, and you must be their top listener! The gamification in this marketing campaign gets people to use the product more and more, becoming stickier and stickier, whilst also encouraging them to upgrade to paid accounts.
Is there a way you could gamify use of your product like this?

Each week we highlight our favourite tools - either something we’ve been using in our businesses, or tools that our Start-Up community have recommended.
Your Codex and my Codex can’t talk, so we play human telephone in Slack: copy prompts, paste summaries, ask for reviews, and lose the run. Vokal brings 10x teammates and their agents into one live workspace in minutes, whether they run local Codex, Claude Code, or Hermes - or in the cloud. Name your agents, give them roles, access, and memory, and work will happen in a shared collaboration space instead of through copy-paste handoffs.

GrantPal: Turning Grant Funding From a Maze Into a Search Engine
Most Founders know the frustration of trying to find grants. Between outdated portals, confusing eligibility requirements and endless PDFs, the process can feel like a full-time job.
GrantPal was built to simplify that experience. The platform matches businesses with relevant funding opportunities based on their stage, sector and location, helping Founders spend less time searching and more time building. Users receive personalised grant opportunities directly to their inbox, while premium features provide access to a searchable database, collaboration tools and a "Reality Check" service that helps determine whether a business is genuinely eligible before investing time into an application.
The long-term ambition is to become the default platform Founders use to discover and track funding opportunities.
From School Friends to Startup Partners
Unlike many Co-Founding stories, there was no networking event or Founder matching platform involved.
Tom and Hayden have known each other since school. GrantPal initially began as Tom's side project, but it quickly became clear that building the automated infrastructure required to scale the platform would need deeper technical expertise.
During a walking holiday, Tom shared his frustrations with Hayden, who immediately saw the opportunity and became excited by the technical challenge. The partnership formed naturally from there.
Today, the split is simple: Tom focuses on growth, partnerships and customer relationships, while Hayden leads product development, infrastructure and technology.
Building the First User Base One Conversation at a Time
GrantPal's first customers didn't come through paid advertising or sophisticated growth campaigns.
Instead, Tom pitched the idea at Menai Science Park, shared it across his personal network and reached out directly to Founders he thought would benefit from the platform. Those early conversations helped validate the concept and generate the first users.
The real breakthrough came when Founders started forwarding GrantPal's funding recommendations to other Founders. That organic word-of-mouth provided strong evidence that the product was solving a genuine problem.
The team also discovered an important lesson around pricing. Free consultation calls attracted interest but converted poorly. Packaging that support into a paid £129 "Reality Check" service immediately increased commitment and conversion rates.
Scaling Through Partnerships, Not Headcount
As the business has grown, the focus has shifted towards building a scalable software platform rather than a consultancy business.
Partnerships with accountants, university enterprise teams, startup communities and business support organisations have become important growth channels. Alongside that, targeted advertising and content marketing are helping GrantPal reach founders who are actively searching for funding.
The goal isn't to manually help every founder find grants. It's to build a platform that can do that at scale.
The Spreadsheet Bottleneck That Forced a Rebuild
One of the biggest lessons came from the limitations of the company's first version.
The original low-code MVP helped prove there was demand, but behind the scenes many processes remained manual. Tom found himself managing spreadsheets, checking grant matches and sending communications by hand.
As the user base grew, those processes became unsustainable.
Building a custom backend and automated matching engine transformed the business. Looking back, Tom believes he would have made that transition much sooner once the concept had been validated.
Growing Without Investors
GrantPal has been bootstrapped from day one.
The founders have kept costs lean, covering only the essentials needed to operate and grow the platform. Rather than raising external capital, they used revenue from consulting services to fund ongoing product development and marketing.
This approach has allowed them to maintain control while proving that the business can generate value and revenue independently.
Learning When to Say No
One challenge Tom didn't expect was learning which customers not to serve.
Many founders looking for grants are still at a very early stage and simply aren't ready for funding yet. Early on, the team spent significant time helping these businesses through manual support.
Over time, they learned to direct those founders towards free educational resources instead, allowing the business to focus its efforts where it could create the most impact.
Three Lessons From Building GrantPal
Looking back, Tom believes three lessons stand out above everything else.
Validate ideas quickly, but move away from low-code solutions once complexity starts increasing.
Find a co-founder whose skills genuinely complement your own and allow both people to focus on what they do best.
And most importantly, build the platform before the service business. Consulting can generate early revenue, but long-term growth comes from creating something that can scale independently of your time.
For GrantPal, the mission remains the same as it was on day one: helping founders spend less time searching for funding and more time building great companies.
