We all hear the word ‘Community’ thrown around in business these days, but Ekho have really put meaning to the label.
Ekho is a clean, nutritious snack bar aimed at health conscious consumers and athletes. What have they done so well? Understand their audience. They know that so many of their ideal customers will be using Strava in some way shape or form, so they’ve gone hard on building a community in Strava.
The first 50 fans to join their Strava community got a free bar! They’re communicating with their community in the way they like to be spoken to, by using the platform they’re all on for the passion that connects them all.
If you’re looking to build community around your business, how can you use platforms outside of the standard social media platforms?

Each week we highlight our favourite tools - either something we’ve been using in our businesses, or tools that our Start-Up community have recommended.
Instruct is the first truly no-code platform where you can build, edit and run powerful AI agents using only natural language - just explain your task, and let Instruct handle the rest.

Kanjo Health: Bringing Clinical Practice Up to the Standard of Research
Kanjo health is aiming to bring clinical practice up to the standard of clinical research in neurodevelopment. Kanjo takes leading research and data sets, and has used the information to build one of the leading models on the market for risk prediction and co-morbidity analytics for ADHD and autism. Based off that model, Kanjo have been able to build their own care delivery and co-ordination for paediatric mental health.
Finding the Right Co-Founder
Sophia met her initial Co-Founder through Entrepreneurs First, which she highly recommends to anyone wanting to build a start-up! Whilst that Co-Founder has since parted and set up a different company, they played a pivotal role in getting Kanjo to where it was before their exit. Since then, Sophia has partnered up with Deepthi, who has taken on the Co-Founder and CTO role. Deepthi was introduced through a mutual friend, and the rest is history!
First Customers: Building Trust, Not Hype
Kanjo Health’s first customers came through word of mouth. The team knew from the outset that when you’re building tools for families and parents, particularly those who are more vulnerable, it’s not about shouting as loudly as you can and plastering your name everywhere via big guerrilla marketing campaigns. It was all about meeting people where they were at and building trust. So, Kanjo health made sure the got involved in school groups early on, and really focused on building deep and genuine relationships.
Scaling through Organisations
After acquiring those early customers, Kanjo looked to scale. What did scaling look like to them? Working with big organisations, be it health, education or general government organisations, which enables them to get Kanjo out to the masses. This has also driven them to iterate the offering, building lower touch tools that are significantly cheaper so everyone can afford access to quality care.
Funding the Journey
Kanjo has received multiple types of funding, having gone through Entrepreneurs First, Kanjo is mostly Venture Capital backed and has been from inception. They’ve also been able to pick up a lot of research grant funding, whilst collecting a number of angel cheques too - with total funding reaching just shy of £2 million.
Getting that First Round off the Ground
Sophia says that Entrepreneurs First really did give Kanjo Health a leg up when fundraising, and enabled them to get their first round off the ground. Beyond that, network is net worth. As a Founder, you have to be very deliberate in building your network. It’s about developing relationships, building trust and showing value. It’s important to get people to believe in you and your vision before anything else.
Reflections so far
A lot of it is just making sure that you have an exceptional sense of self-belief. Self-belief is imperative when building these companies, because you truly have to believe that you’re the best at what you do. The other thing Sophia said she’d do differently is de-centring her personal identity from Kanjo. Which she states is something she should’ve done early on, and made sure there was a life outside of the business.

Next week I’ll be highlighting another awesome Start-Up, as well as sharing all the usuals including funding opportunities, Start-Up news, plus plenty of awesome tips, tricks and tools.
